Once you start swapping your 2010 Lexus RX350’s bulbs over to LED, the backup (reverse) lights are one of the last and easiest to do. They make a big visual difference — the reverse lights go from a dull yellowish glow to a crisp, bright white — and unlike every other bulb on the truck, these won’t burn your fingers, because reverse lights are off unless you’re actually in reverse.
The whole job takes about five minutes and needs no tools.
Step-by-step
- Open the rear hatch and locate the backup light access. Behind the cardboard trim panel you’ll find a small porthole that gives you access to the bulb socket.
- Remove the bulb socket. Grab the socket, turn it (counterclockwise) to unlock it, then pull it straight out of the housing.
- Pull the old bulb. These bulbs pull straight out of the socket — they don’t twist.
- Insert the new LED. LED reverse bulbs are directional — they only seat one way, so line it up before pushing it in. Don’t force it in backward.
- Reinstall the socket. Drop the socket back into the housing, then twist it to the right to lock it in place.
- Reseat the trim panel. The cardboard trim only goes back one way. The trick: start the two tabs on one side first, then drop in the single tab on the other — two tabs, then the one tab, and it snaps right back.
- Test it. Press the ignition button twice to power up without starting the engine, hold the brake, and shift into reverse. You should see a bright white light — much brighter than the old bulb.
Pro tip: Compare the new LED to the old bulb before you install. The lensed-tip LEDs sit a little larger, so seat them gently to avoid the tip catching the housing lens. And since the socket only twists one way to lock, a quick “twist to the right” is all it takes.
That’s it
A five-minute, no-tool, no-burn upgrade that genuinely improves how well you can see behind you at night. The exact LED bulbs used — the ones with the brightness-boosting lens on the end — are linked in the parts box above.
FAQ
Do the backup light bulbs get hot like other bulbs?
No — backup (reverse) lights are only on when you're in reverse, so they're cold when you go to change them. That's the one bulb on the RX350 you can swap without burning your fingers.
How do I test the backup lights without starting the engine?
Press the ignition button twice (without your foot on the brake) to go to accessory/ignition mode, then hold the brake and shift into reverse. The reverse lights will come on so you can confirm the new LEDs work — no need to actually start the car.
The LED bulb is bigger than the stock bulb — will it still fit?
Yes. The LEDs run a bit larger than the OEM bulbs and the lensed tip can sit close to the housing, but they seat fine. Just remember the bulb only goes in one orientation — line it up before pushing, don't force it.
